Alpine Resorts Sustainability Forum 2008 - Creating Sustainable Alpine Communities

Return to Events

The 2008 Sustainability Forum brought together 130 of the key players involved in alpine resorts from across Australia. The theme this year was "Creating Sustainable Alpine Communities". The Forum was again held at the Olympic Room at the Melbourne Cricket Ground which proved convenient to those coming from various parts of regional Victoria and interstate. The delegates again included a strong contingent from alpine resort land managers and lift companies, but also attracted delegates from a number of the smaller on-mountain businesses and a range of umbrella groups and organisations.

International keynote speaker, Dr Hanspeter Danuser, the CEO of St. Moritz in Switzerland, shared his extensive knowledge and experience in developing leading edge environmental programs, including St Moritz's highly successful "Clean Energy" project. Delegates were particularly interested in how St Moritz was dealing with "hot" and "cold" beds and providing housing for resort staff and year-round residents. Dr Danuser's presentation was for most participants a real highlight of the day - and they were delighted when Dr Danuser finished his presentation with an impromptu Alphorn concert!

World champion skier, Jacqui Cooper, was announced as a "Keep Winter Cool" ambassador and shared her message that we can all help protect the snowfields from global warming by reducing our energy use. Another highlight was a sneak preview of Steve Curtain's freeheel film - amazing shots concluding with some humorous Keep Winter Cool messages.

An interactive "hypothetical" session led by media presenter Rob Gell was of special interest. A panel of industry experts led the discussion on approaches to achieving sustainability in a new world of climate change.

The forum concluded with workshops topics covering economic and social issues, key worker housing, and the possibilities for nature-based and indigenous tourism.

Once again, participants appreciated the opportunity to come together and learn of some of the latest developments around Australia and the world and the feedback received has been over whelmingly positive."

Hypothetical: Imagine a brave new world where Australia's favourite beachside playgrounds are experiencing sea level rises and increased storminess. Farmland is dry and dusty. Everyone is heading for the cool of the mountains. It's no longer a "seachange", but an "alpschange", that is underway. New alpine communities? Shorter snow seasons? How will the experts react?
